A protest march on the 12th of May was organised by a Port Moresby based NGO group against the influx of Asians in Papua New Guinea and taking over of small businesses reserved for Papua New Guineans. Even though the protest march through Port Moresby from Gordons, to Four Mile and Waiganai was peaceful, opportunists and others who heard about it later targeted Asian owned businesses which resulted in most Asian owned shops closing their doors for the rest of the day. The protest eventually spread to other major centres of the country such as Lae, Madang and Goroka where there were reported cases of looting. Photos below show the protest march through the streets of Port Moresby.
